Ghana’s Majority Leader Calls For Next Administration To Retain Current Speaker Bagbin
2 min readSpeaking in Parliament on Monday, Afenyo Markin emphasized that the NDC MPs are unpredictable, and for that reason, they might choose to replace Alban Bagbin, despite the significant support he has provided to them during the 8th Parliament.
Afenyo Markin urged the NDC MPs to retain Alban Bagbin as Speaker. He further added that if they decide to replace him, they should select someone who has prior experience as a Member of Parliament, as such a person would better understand the workings of the House.
“Mr. Speaker, I don’t know whether you will be retained or a new person will be appointed. But I pray that if they decide to remove you, after all you have done for them, they should carefully consider their decision. Of all you have done for them, if they still choose to remove you, we will see. If they decide to retain you, I believe Parliament will benefit. However, if the new government decides to bring in a new Speaker, that Speaker must come from within this House to ensure they understand us.”
John Mahama will be sworn in as the president of Ghana on 7th January, 2025. There will be several changes in government. The speaker of Parliament could be changed. All Government appointees will be sacked unless the incoming government decides to retain them, which doesn’t often happen.
