24 hours economy plan was my idea – Hassan Ayariga

In a recent press conference held in Accra, Hassan Ayariga, founder and leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), made a bold claim regarding the 24-hour economy policy. According to Ayariga, the policy proposal was actually captured in the APC’s 2020 manifesto, making them the originators of this concept. The policy suggests implementing a three-shift system where companies, businesses, and workers would operate around the clock, with each individual working eight hours daily.

This claim has sparked a heated debate among political parties and political scientists, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former President Mahama finding themselves at odds with Ayariga’s assertion. While the NDC has expressed support for investing in a 24-hour economy to revitalize the struggling Ghanaian economy, Ayariga argues that they are struggling to explain their position. On the other hand, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia are also grappling with understanding the policy, as Ayariga believes it does not belong to them.

Ayariga further elaborated on the 24-hour production policy, explaining that it aims to divide Ghana’s workforce into three groups, known as the three-shift system. Each shift would work for eight hours, starting from 6am to 2pm, 2pm to 10pm, and 10pm to 6am, creating a continuous 24-hour cycle. The goal of this policy is to boost productivity, create jobs, and foster a vibrant economy that operates round the clock.

Proponents of the policy argue that it would bring flexibility to working hours, reduce corruption, and eliminate delays in government processes. Ayariga emphasized that the intention is not to have some institutions merely assigning two people for night shifts, but to ensure that businesses, workers, and companies operate at full capacity throughout the day and night.

The proposal has garnered mixed opinions from individuals, politicians, civil society organizations, and the business community. While some see the potential benefits of increased productivity and job creation, others have raised concerns about the practicality and implementation of such a system.
