Every Ghanaian owes 19,000 Ghana cedis – John Mahama

His excellency John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the former president of Ghana, delivered a policy paper on behalf of the NDC, at the Trades Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana.He said every Ghanaian owes an amount of 19,000 Ghana cedis if the county’s dept of 577 billion cedis is shared among Ghanaians.

He explained that unlike 2016 where Ghanaians owed 4,000 cedis each , the amount has now increased drastically under the ruling New Patriotic Party . He said if 577 billion cedis debt of Ghana is shared among 30 million people, then every Ghanaian has an amount of 19,000 Ghana cedis to pay.

He said the economy is plagued by high debt levels which is affecting investments in social and economic developmental projects negatively in Ghana.

The marginal increase in the total debt of the country was due to the slightest depreciation of the cedi to the dollar in April and June 2023.
